Sofia Vergara's "Modern Family" Insult of Peru is a Testiment to American Ignorance

Peru has a right to be offended about this. On another typical sorry excuse for entertainment on American Television.  Sofia Vergara uttered an obnoxious line.  It's in the video above, but just in case the video gets deleted, here's what she says.

Random fat american character (presumably married to indentured Latina):  It worked out this time, but don't forget that stealing is against the law.  Now maybe in Colombia...

Sofia "I'm from Colombia" Vergara:  Ah here we go because in Colombia we (uninteligible...something about goats) and we kill people in the street.  Do you know how offensive that is?  Like we're Peruvians!

First of all, I lived in Peru for 10 years and I'm going to plainly say that on a daily basis I felt a lot fucking safer in Peru than I do in the US.  For some reason there's this huge mythology that South America is dangerous (well...ironically Colombia is pretty dangerous), but it's pretty much just invented so that asshole American tourists pay ten times as much for a "safe" taxi as opposed to some regular street taxi that would give you a fair price.

Second of all...this comment isn't at all funny!  Even if there hypothetically was a place where they killed people in the streets, would that be something to use as a punchline as a joke on a nationally syndicated program?  That's bullshit!

What we have here is the case where some uneducated dipshit writer for this second rate piece of crap television show got lazy and thought s/he was writing something funny by insulting an entire nation.  I wish he or she would step forward and take responsibility for this ignorant idiocy (but s/he won't because s/he is a worthless piece of human waste who probably only got the job because his/her daddy/mommy works at the studio...or OWNS the studio like every other cocaine addicted brat in Hollywood).

The thing is...basically nobody in the US knows ANYTHING about South America.  Frankly, if shit's not happening in the US, then Americans aren't interested.  That's why Americans are basically the laughing stock of the entire world for being a punch of pompous, self-centered assholes.  If they ever develop the guts to go traveling somewhere, they're realize that this is a misconception they have to overcome with basically everyone they start a conversation with.

I mean...why would this writer piss off Peru?  Why not say Venezuela?  I mean, US/Venezuelan relations are already strained.  Nobody's going to object if Venezuela gets pissed off!  The US is FRIENDS with PERU!  Who's this fucking ignorant dipshit writer?  Why the hell does s/he think it's acceptable to STRAIN relations with a nation that is a FRIEND of the US?  I mean...what the fuck?  How unbelievably arrogant and selfish!  If one tourist has to wait even one second longer than normal in immigrations because of this dipshit...s/he should do jail time as far as I'm concerned.  What an asshole!

To make matters worse, the first blog that I did a search on about this topic seemed to think that Peru was overreacting.  The author of this blog, who cowardly signed only as Sam (from TVFix), wrote:

"Seriously, Peru: it was a joke. Just laugh it off and get back to your goat-tripping and people-killing."

Sorry ASSHAT, it doesn't qualify as a JOKE because it wasn't fucking FUNNY.  And...for the record...Peruvians DON'T "people-kill" or "goat-trip" (whatever the fuck that means).

Seriously, this is another one of those days where it's a fucking embarrassment to be American.  I don't even really blame Sofia Vergara because she's just an idiot actress who reads the cards that are put in front of her (but she should have known better than to say something like this against Peru which is totally untrue and unprovoked).  But this inbred Sam from TVFix fuckwad (I'm guessing that his mother was so fucking ugly that the only one she could get to take her was her own father...with her grandfather and the dog thrown in every now and then...but it was OK because Sam's mother was such a whore that she just LOOOOVED it [by the way Sam from TVFix, if you find this offensive...seriously, it's only a joke.  Just laugh it off and get back to holding the video camera as your mom double teams your dad and grandfather]).

Man..in Peru they have a word for people like Sofia Vergara and the writers of Modern Family and Sam from TVFix.  These people are maleducado.  It means they are impolite, but it's a little stronger than that because the literal translation is "poorly educated."  This implies that they should know better, but because their parents and their community did a bad job of instilling basic values...these people turned out to be assholes.

Look...if the NATION of Peru is OFFENDED by this comment then SOMEBODY should make a public apology.  Hell, I'll do it right now:

"On behalf of Sofia Vergara and the imbecile writers of 'Modern Family' Streets of Lima hereby wishes to apologize for the ignorant, non-humorous comments made against Peru on that crappy television episode which is another example of a long tradition of horrible American Television programming."

That's the best I can do Peru.  I just hope that you take heart and understand that not all Americans are total ignorant dipshit fuckwads like those surrounding this "Modern Family" affair.  They embarrass the rest of us, and in the end, Peru ends up looking like the nation with the more mature/superior attitude.

God...I wish these people could just grow up and issue an apology instead of puffing out their chests like they're about to get into a bar fight...maleducados de mierda, obviamente son cualquier hijos del vecino no?...y no se preocupen, los imbeciles no pueden leer espanol, ni ningun otro idoma menos ingles, que broma de verdad...

  2. Im going to risk sounding like an ass but i find very funny the fact that you point out the ignorance the average american has of south america, while writing Columbia instead of Colombia.
Of course that hardly qualifies you as an ignorant it is an understandable mistake, but it makes the article unintentionally funny.

  3. You're not an ass, it's good to point things like that out. But it was a typo, and I only did it on two of the four times I mentioned Colombia. I get "Their/they're/there" mixed up too sometimes. Not because I don't know the rule, but when I get fired up, I can't be bothered with grammar or correct spelling.

  4. The line was meant to show the ignorance of Gloria, Sofia's character. She's bitching about her husband (random fat American Ed O'Neill, of Married with Children fame) stereotyping her country, Colombia - and then she turns around and does the same thing to Peru. It's on purpose - to show the idiocy and asshattedness of stereotyping whole countries. To make you laugh at HER ignorance, not make fun of Peru.

It's very much how back on All in the Family, Archie Bunker was a racist cretin. When he said someone was a 'kike' or a 'spic', they (the writers) weren't insulting Jews or Latinos - they were showing what a frigging racist cretin Archie was. They made racists look stupid and ignorant, and took away their power.

I don't pretend to say that Modern Family is as groundbreaking as All in the Family (although it comes close at times), but it functions on the same principles.

  6. Hey Anonymous,
If you aren't offended, then you aren't Peruvian...you're probably Chilean (and if you're offended by that suggestion...get over it, it's just a joke).

  10. I have never had any bad experience in Peru being Peruvian and living there for more than 20 years. In USA I got the windshield of my car broken,my purse stolen and all in fine places (malls) soo.. maybe Peru is not the safest place in the world but it's just funny that Americans think that...ohh..they probably think that Peru is located in...Africa? you know the capital of Mexico hahahaha...however the American who really said this was serious WOAAA..

  11. honestly, i was born in Peru and i love Peru with all my heart but this was a joke to show Gloria's ignorance and to also show how Colombia and Peru don't get along. I don't understand why people are taking this up the butt, we as peruvians say deeper insults than what Gloria said and we know it. So people should just get over it, just because they said that it does not take the beauty out of Peru nor the kindness of their people.

  12. The streets of Peru are safer than the states? They created the safe taxis so American tourist will pay more? Can you get more ignorant! Peru is a wonderful country, but it is still dangerous. I have lived here for 4 years and have had MANY friends get robbed in taxis in Lima, get robbed in BEATEN from taxi drivers and accomplices in other departments, friends get RAPED, I have gotten robbed at gun point, do not say it is not dangerous. That is a complete lie. It is more dangerous than the states. That is why women cannot walk outside alone at night. Your comment was very insensitive to me and many others how have had violent acts committed against them in the country.

  13. What bothers me is the lack of good grammar in that line. Shouldn't it be "like we WERE Peruvians" instead?

  16. Its sad to see an idiot actress like sofia who fucked her way up to the top so that she can be on american television and comercials ..tipical colombian style ...for those of u that dont know colombian woman are know for being gold diggers and hoes in latin america...Colombians are also known for being ugly and having cocaine cartels ..So wat if a peruvian actress would have said that about colombians in an american tv show??? ...Colombians would be offened too ... SORRY but I would perfer being offened by someone that knows what they are talking about rather than a low class durty colombian slut that sells her ass to get her way to the top .. NO ONE EVEN UNDERSTANDS WTF SHES SAYING half of the time. So she should quit !!!
